Brick remains one of the most important building materials for construction activities in India and other developing countries. It is estimated that in India, more than 115,000 brick making units operate, out of these 15,000 are larger units, It is one of the largest employment generating industries, providing about 1.5 millions jobs in the country. It has the capacity of producing about 140 billion bricks yearly with an annual turnover of more than Rs.l40 billion.
The construction industry contributes to about 10% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), registering an annual growth of about 9%.
India is the 2nd largest brick producer in the world.
India’s Annual brick production is growing by 5-10% because of rapid increase in demand for bricks in infrastructure and housing industries. Clay fired bricks are the backbone of construction industry which is valued at approximately US$ 70.8 billion.
