The Ceramic Industry in India Continues Being Attractive for International Companies

The Ceramic Industry in India Continues Being Attractive for International Companies

  • Indian Ceramics and Ceramics Asia as a co-location enjoy excellent popularity

The two strongest ceramics trade shows of India, namely Indian Ceramics and Ceramics Asia, will be held concurrently at the Gujarat University Exhibition Centre in Ahmedabad for the first time from March 2 to 4, 2016.

India is the strongest growing ceramics market worldwide. Today, India is among the top three countries in the field of tile production and its further development is proceeding by giant strides. More than 70% of the country’s entire ceramics production takes place in the Indian Federal State of Gujarat situated in the country’s north-western part.

Therefore, Gujarat’s capital Ahmedabad is the ideal venue for the co-location of Indian Ceramics and Ceramics Asia and the key to the Indian ceramic industry.

Indian Ceramics and Ceramics Asia 2016- first co- location receives overwhelming response

Indian Ceramics and Ceramics Asia 2016- first co- location receives overwhelming response

  • 100+ companies from China
  • Expansion by 3,000 sqare meters
  • Large number of new exhibitors

3 months before the first co-location of Indian Ceramics and Ceramics Asia, India´s leading B2B trade fair is well ahead of its 11th edition. Approximately 250 exhibitors from India and across the globewill be presenting their products and solutions, which will cover the entire spectrum of the sector, from ceramic machinery to raw materials.China will represent one of the strongest country participation with over 100 exhibitors.

Over 6000 visitors are expected to attend the trade fairs, that will be held from March 2-4, 2016 at the Gujarat University Exhibition Centre, Ahmedabad. For the visitors valuable synergies will derive from the stronger international representation and a broader range of products. For all the key Chinese, Indian and European exhibitors will be coming together on an exhibition space that is now expanded by 3,000 square meters.

The trade fairs have received strong support from the industry and the associations, with each stakeholder participating actively at the event.

Gerhard Gerritzen, Deputy Managing Director, MesseMuenchen GmbH talks exclusively to Asian Ceramics (www.asianceramics.com) about the MMI/Unifair tie-up.

Gerhard Gerritzen, Deputy Managing Director, MesseMuenchen GmbH talks exclusively to Asian Ceramics (www.asianceramics.com) about the MMI/Unifair tie-up.

The situation of having two annual exhibitions for the ceramics industry in Ahmedabad was extremely unsatisfactory for exhibitors and visitors alike. So at the request of several customers, we reached out to our competitor and quickly found a common basis for collaborating with one another. We are absolutely convinced that we have achieved more than “1 + 1 = 2” with the co-location solution of “two shows—one date”. Now the important Indian ceramics market has THE central marketplace—a win-win situation for everyone involved” says MrGerritzen.

Of course, Indian Ceramics always had a clear focus and a unique profile on the Indian market. We don’t want to nor do we intend to change anything about that. Exhibitors and visitors can expect the same tried-and-tested concept that they know. However, we do see additional potential that also extends beyond India, and we would like to position the event accordingly. Our partnership with Unifair, which agrees with our assessment about market opportunities, is intended to be long term. Both sides want to continue expanding Ahmedabad as a trade-fair venue.

Given this backdrop, we actually expect this partnership to yield synergies. The exhibition will be larger. More space will be needed. Unfortunately, the Gujarat University Convention and Exhibition Centre doesn’t have enough exhibition space. At the 2015 fair, we set up an additional tent hangar, which worked out very well. We will continue to pursue this approach and expand outside the hall. Having two organizers makes it easier to deal with the necessary investments and offer exhibitors a show with an attractive price-performance ratio.

But how does the German exhibition giant consider the branding will now evolve for the event?

Brand names are important. Indian Ceramics is the kind of brand name that is very well established, and naturally we would like to develop the brand further. But we will evaluate the situation after the fair in March 2016. Ceramics Asia takes place at the same time, but it is also closely intertwined with us. We are looking forward to this collaboration and to the boost that it will give to both events.

You see, when two partners decide to collaborate, each of them must strengthen their strengths to improve the overall result. Unifairis a Chinese company, so of course it is extremely well positioned in China and Asia. As the organizer of Ceramics China, it has outstanding contacts in the industry around the world. MesseMünchenand its Indian subsidiary know the markets in India and Europe, and we have our customer potential there. To establish clear areas of responsibility and, in doing so, give the exhibitors a contact from the region, this breakdown made perfect sense. Beyond that, we don’t see any additional influences.

So, combined forces, but will it be a clash of ideals? MrGerritzen clearly doesn’t think so, and emphasises the fact that there will now greater stability in the market:

When there were two exhibitions on the same topic at the same location, it was an “either or” situation for many exhibitors and visitors. So we made the decision for them. Now there is only one event that will bring all exhibitors and visitors together. Unifairand MesseMünchenare both private-sector organizations. Naturally, both organizers want to earn money by getting involved in India. It is true: Indian Ceramics’ price structure was very inconsistent. Add to that strong fluctuations in the exchange rate. MesseMünchenhas been the organizer of Indian Ceramics for two years. During that period, we have been working very hard to implement uniform conditions. The positive side of co-locating these two events is that we can offer all exhibitors even better prices that are in line with the market.

The key point is that, now, we offer a platform for all of the industry’s companies that do business in India and neighboring countries. The expenses incurred when a company participates in a trade show depend on size. Particularly in the case of shell-scheme stands for smaller companies, the cost of participating in the exhibition are less than the incidental expenses for flights, hotels and the salaries of participating employees. Many countries also support companies by offering them subsidies when they participate in trade fairs in other countries.

So that’s the news order of things…what does it mean for future development?

We would like very much to acquire new exhibitor sectors and groups of visitors for the fair. Ceramics is a fascinating material and we are sure that it still has a great deal of growth potential here. The dates in March are due to the late Chinese New Year. Generally speaking, we are aiming at holding the exhibition in mid- to late February, although each year the actually dates will depend on the dates of competing events as well as national and international holidays.

India is one of MesseMünchen’s key markets. We have subsidiaries in China, Turkey, South Africa and also in India. That underscores how important India is to us. We organize and develop customized trade fairs for the country and the market in several branches of industry. It is a long-term commitment that makes us one of the important organizers in India. Personally, I am always very pleased when I get the chance to visit India. I like the country a lot—it is incredibly dynamic and its people are extremely dedicated. Our subsidiary MMI India has a strong team and we are proud of how things have developed over the past few years. I am excited and look forward to our ongoing collaboration.

Two strong shows — Indian Ceramics and Ceramics Asia now co-located

Two strong shows — Indian Ceramics and Ceramics Asia now co-located

Already India ranks in the top three tile-producing countries worldwide and the industry is continuing to expand. Gujarat accounts for more than 70 percent of the entire ceramics production of the whole of India, so for the ceramics companies in this region—over 600 in total—Ahmedabad is an excellent choice of location. It is the key to the Indian ceramics market, especially now with Indian Ceramics and Ceramics Asia being held concurrently at the same venue here.

As leading trade fairs for investment in the ceramics industry, these two shows cover the entire bandwidth of classical ceramics, from raw materials to digital printing. The exhibitors will be presenting the latest technologies and innovations at these platforms. For all decision-makers in the Indian ceramics industry, attendance at both these events is a must. Because this is where they can review all the technological innovations and the machinery and systems that are designed to help them meet the challenges of the future.

The organizers, MMI India and Unifair, both have many years of experience in the trade-fair business. The responsibilities have been divided up between the two companies according to region: MMI India covers the Indian, European, Russian and Turkish markets, While Unifair looks after China, Asia and America.

For the visitors valuable synergies will derive from the stronger international representation and a broader range of products. For all the key Chinese, Indian and European exhibitors will be coming together on an exhibition space reaching to 8,000 square meters.

Modi’s “Clean India” campaign having positive effects on Indian ceramics market

Modi’s “Clean India” campaign having positive effects on Indian ceramics market

  • India among top three countries for tile production
  • The most important global players have registered for Indian Ceramics

Right now, India is one of the top three countries for tile production. Seventy percent of all ceramic goods produced in the country are manufactured in Gujarat, and especially in Morbi. For the more than 600 ceramics companies in this region, Ahmedabad is the perfect place to hold Indian Ceramics.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi established the “Clean India” campaign on October 2, 2014. He did so to create and increase awareness about public cleanliness and hygiene among his fellow citizens. Among other things, his objective is to have all private households, schools and public buildings equipped with toilettes by the year 2019. Modi’s appeal is expected to give the Indian ceramics industry a great deal of momentum because, right now, approximately 594 million people—about half of India’s
population—do not have toilettes or bathrooms in their apartments.

In view of this campaign, Indian Ceramics is the perfect platform for all decisionmakers in the ceramics industry. As the leading trade fair for suppliers in the ceramics industry, it depicts the entire range of exhibits, from classic ceramics and raw materials to digital printing. Exhibitors present their latest technologies and innovations here. In addition, all important global players will be at the fair in Ahmedabad. Leading international manufacturers such as Beralmar, Cleia, Craven Fawcett, Cretaprint,
Dorst, Eirich, Esmalglass-Itaca, Händle, H&R Johnson, Imerys, Netzsch, Sabo, SACMI, Saint Gobain, Sibelco, SITI B&T, Smalticeram, Smaltochimica, System, Torrecid and Verdes are among the companies that will be represented at Indian Ceramics.

In other worlds, Indian Ceramics 2015 is being held at exactly the right time and at exactly the right place for exhibitors and visitors alike.

“Particularly against the backdrop of this ambitious project initiated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, attending Indian Ceramics is a must for all decision-makers in the ceramics industry. It is where they find all the technical innovations as well as the plants and machinery they need to meet the challenges that they face,” confirms Werner Griebe, Managing Board, Duravit AG.

Indian Ceramics 2015 adds new hall

Indian Ceramics 2015 adds new hall

  • New hall increases exhibition space by 30 percent
  • The most important global players are registered
  • Fair to be accompanied by sophisticated supporting program

The amount of exhibition space at Indian Ceramics has increased by 30 percent compared to the last time the exhibition was held. The new Hall D replaces the former Hall C.

Exhibitors are responding very well to the additional space. Early indications show that many international exhibitors will have much larger stands at Indian Ceramics than they did last year. Another advantage of the new hall is that distances between the halls are much shorter and visitors can get to both halls quickly and conveniently.

Two months before Indian Ceramics 2015 opens its gates, all important global players are registered for the fair. Market leaders such as Beralmar, Cleia, Craven Fawcett, Cretaprint, Dorst, Eirich, Esmalglass-Itaca, Händle, H&R Johnson, Imerys, Netzsch, Sabo, SACMI, Saint Gobain, Sibelco, SITI B&T, Smalticeram, Smaltochimica, System, Torrecid, Verdes and many more will be represented there. They cover the entire range of classic ceramics as well as everything from raw materials to technical
ceramics.

In addition, ACIMAC (Association of Italian Manufacturers of Machinery and Equipment for Ceramics) is collaborating with the ICE (Italian Foreign Trade Institute) to organize a large Italian joint exhibition stand. This documents how interested the Italian ceramics industry is in the Indian market.

As always, a sophisticated supporting program will accompany the fair again in 2015. cfi (ceramic forum international) is organizing a ceramitec workshop, the motto of which is “Advances in Ceramic Raw Materials and Process Technologies.” The seminar is supported by ceramitec in Munich and is being held in the Innovation Exchange Area from 10:30 to 14:00 on January 22, 2015. Well-known international companies such as Amberger Kaolinwerke, Dorst Technologies, Carborundum Universal Limited, Jyoti Ceramics Inds., XAAR, Esmalglass-Itaca, Durst Phototechnik AG and Beralmar Technoligic are sending speakers to the workshop. Participation is free of charge.

The workshop will open with a panel discussion led by Karin Scharrer, Editor in Chief of cfi. Prominent participants include Rajesh Nath from VDMA India and representatives of the Indian ceramics industry.
